Look at the volume column. The first three rows carry the overwhelming majority of your requests and none of them are logged in, so none of them need a consumer IP. The last two rows are where a household or phone IP earns its price, and they are tiny.

Pricing units matter more than labels. A thread-priced plan bills for concurrency, so a 2 MB page and a 20 KB page cost the same. A per-GB plan bills for weight, so every image is money. Product research is image-heavy by nature, and that single fact drives most of the cost gap.

Vendor list prices move. Across the larger residential vendors, advertised entry rates for rotating residential bandwidth as of September 2026 commonly sit in the low single digits of dollars per GB, with committed volume bringing that down. The Cost Math That Decides Your Bill

Here is the number nobody puts on a pricing page: bytes per useful record. A listing rendered in a real browser with images, fonts, analytics and JavaScript bundles runs a couple of megabytes. Fetched as raw HTML, or through the store's own JSON endpoint, it is a fraction of that. The record you keep is a few hundred bytes either way.

The $3 per GB rate is illustrative, not a quote from any vendor, and the response sizes are typical page weights rather than measured results. Substitute your shortlisted provider's published rate and your own pages. The shape is the point: on per-GB billing, the gap between a careless crawler and a careful one is roughly sixty to one. On unlimited datacenter, that gap shows up as elapsed time instead of an invoice.

Two consequences follow. If you insist on residential for everything, block images, fonts, media and third-party analytics in your fetcher, because you pay for every byte. And if your workload is mostly public catalog reading, unlimited bandwidth removes the incentive to under-collect. Plenty of dropshippers throttle their own research because each extra page carries a marginal cost, which is a bad trade when the data is the whole point.

Sizing: How Many Threads You Need

Threads are concurrent connections. Throughput follows a simple relationship:

At a 1.5 second average round trip, 100 threads is theoretically 240,000 requests per hour. You will never see that, because you should be pacing per domain rather than firing everything at one supplier. Real ceilings come from your politeness limits and your retries, not from the gateway. Every plan above carries unlimited bandwidth and 30 days validity, and the speed figure is a Fair Usage Policy ceiling rather than a guaranteed rate. Whitelist slots decide how many machines authenticate by IP instead of by username and password. Five covers a laptop and a couple of cloud workers. Run crawlers on ephemeral cloud instances whose addresses change and you want credential auth instead.

Buying Checklist Before You Pay

Ask these of every provider on your shortlist. The answers separate real infrastructure from a reseller with a landing page.

  1. Is bandwidth unlimited, or unlimited subject to a fair usage speed cap? A published cap per tier is honest. Silence usually means an undisclosed throttle.
  2. Does the plan sell threads or IPs? Threads govern throughput on a gateway; a raw IP count tells you little about speed.

Where Cheap Proxies Cost You Money

Datacenter IPs announce themselves. The ASN behind them is registered to a hosting company, and any target that cares can look that up. For public catalog pages this rarely matters, since a store's own economics favor letting crawlers read a product page. For login walls, payment steps and aggressive anti-bot deployments, a datacenter IP is a visible signal and you will see higher challenge rates.

Free and near-free proxy lists are worse than nothing here. They are shared with hundreds of strangers, usually already flagged on the exact ecommerce targets you want, and sometimes logging your traffic. If supplier or account credentials will ever pass through a proxy, price is the wrong thing to optimize.

Residential is not automatically better either. A residential IP in the wrong country returns the wrong price, and one that rotates mid-session breaks a cart flow. The realistic answer is a mixed stack: datacenter for the volume, a small residential or mobile balance for the pages that need it, and a fallback so a request challenged on the cheap route retries on the expensive one. That fallback starts with detecting when your scraper is blocked, because a 200 response containing a challenge page is the failure mode that quietly poisons a dataset.

What Proxies Cannot Fix

A proxy changes your network path. It does not change your browser fingerprint, your cookies, your timing patterns, or the fact that five stores are managed from one machine. Platforms link accounts on all of those signals.

Three rules that survive contact with reality:

  • One account, one IP, held long term. Rotating a store login across a fresh IP every request looks exactly like a takeover attempt.
  • Keep research traffic and account traffic on separate credentials and separate machines. Never route an ad manager session through the same rotating pool sweeping a marketplace.
  • Sticky sessions are for flows, not identity. A sticky port holds an IP for the length of a session, which is right for a multi-step checkout check and wrong as a substitute for a dedicated account IP.

On the legal side, collecting publicly available product and price data is normal commercial activity, and the Ninth Circuit's 2022 decision in hiQ Labs v. LinkedIn is the case most often cited for public data falling outside the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. That is not a blanket permission slip: site terms, contract claims, personal data rules and copyright still apply. Read the terms of the sites you collect from, and take advice if you operate at scale.

Proxies or a Scraping API

Raw proxies are the cheaper unit, but you build retries, rotation, header handling and browser rendering yourself. A scraping API bundles that and bills per request. For a dropshipper with no engineer on staff, the API often costs less in total.
